Windows
Window replacement can look a variety of ways, and there are many options and models, however each situation usually has some specific determining factors that can help to narrow down the possibilities from what seems unlimited to just a few choices.
General Information
The biggest factor that should be considered when replacing full frame windows is current interior jamb width versus exterior frame size. Some windows come with flush or straight jambs, this means the inside the interior opening is the same as the exterior. Other windows come with “stepped” jambs, this means the interior of the window is actually smaller than the exterior. Certain brands and models usually come standard with one of the others.
This is a very important, and sometimes overlooked factor. An example would be if you switched from a Pella window that has flush jambs, to a Marvin window with stepped in jambs, the exterior frame size would be roughly the same on both windows, however on the Marvin with ⅝” stepped jambs, the interior would be smaller by ⅝” on each side. This means existing window.
treatments might not fit in the new window, the new trim would sit further in and there might be ugly paint lines around the window, if a gap where wallpaper or tile stopped because the new opening was smaller. We like to keep window with the same jamb configuration as it helps to prevent these problems. Sometimes they can be unavoidable though.
Sash replacement vs Frame replacement
Sash replacement instead of full frame replacement, this involves leaving the existing frame and changing out the operable part of the window or the part of that window that encapsulates the glass. This will give you a new window that seals again, with new glass as well. The existing hardware, locks and screens stay and are reused. The interior wood of the sash is custom stained or painted to match your existing windows. This is only an option if the original manufacturer makes replacement sash for your model window.
Quality
In terms of quality, The top tier of windows will always be all wood interior, wood construction and usually clad in an extruded aluminum or fiberglass. The bottom tier of windows will be all vinyl construction inside and out. We do not install or deal in all vinyl windows, in our opinion the vinyl expands and contracts too much with temperature changes, over time they start to slightly warp, seals fail, and issues arise.
